PHOTOS: A large wildfire burning on Kauai is now 60% contained, according to the latest update from the county.
Kauai Fire crews were first called out to a report of a brush fire burning near Waimea Canyon Drive, in Kokee, just before 3 a.m.
Firefighters have conducted multiple air drops on the fire, which is estimated to have grown to about 1,200 acres in size, according to an update from the county on social media at 8 a.m. An updated estimate of the fire's size has not been given.
The fire is burning on the mauka side of Waimea Canyon Drive, KFD said. No homes or structures are being threatened at this time.
“We are thankful to our fire crews and partners who continue to respond to this large brush fire," said KFD Chief Michael Gibson.
