Thursday the Hawaii County Fire Department (HFD) responded to an acid spill in Waiakea. Fire officials say hydrogen chloride acid spilled from containers at a freight forwarding company on Maka'ala Street. Nine total units were on scene, including a Hazmat, ladder and four engines. Self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) were used to perform an initial survey and confirm the product and spill area. Personnel used absorbant and a base to neutralize the acid. Once the scene was stabilized, HFD says it was handed over to the business to work with a decontamination contractor.
