Firefighters extinguished six brush fires that were reported late Monday night in multiple areas along Honoapiilani Highway from Maalaea to Ukumehame, according to the Maui Fire Department.
Three fires, each about 40-by-40 feet, burned mauka of the highway. Three other fires burned about 200 feet along the road, continuing down the makai cliffside, the Fire Department reported.
The fires were reported at 11:38 p.m. Monday. Eight fire companies from Wailuku, Kahului, Lahaina and Wailea responded to the fires along with a battalion chief.
Honoapiilani Highway was closed between Maalaea Harbor Road and Ukumehame Wayside Park until the last fire was extinguished at 4:40 a.m. Tuesday.
The cause of the fires is under investigation, the Fire Department said.
