Drought is spreading and worsening in some areas of Micronesia, according to the National Weather Service Guam drought information statement released Friday. Exceptional drought persists across Yap State and the northern Marshall Islands including Wotje and nearby islands. Most of the islands in the Marianas are experiencing extreme drought including Saipan, Tinian and Guam. Rota is in a moderate drought as well as some islands in the Marshall Islands. However, Guam did receive significant rainfall midweek this week, but it was after the weekly reporting period for the drought statement. Next week’s analysis could show some improvement for Guam, NWS stated. Satellite and rain gauge data show drier than normal conditions across parts of Micronesia during the last 30 days; particularly for areas north of 7N.
