Firefighters battled a stubborn blaze Thursday that torched a pile of pallets at a recycling center between Jackson and Jenkinsburg. Crews responded to the fire around 2:30 p.m. and an hour later had made little progress tamping down the smoke and flames that burned inside a large pile of broken up and whole wooden pallets. Firefighters from Butts County, Jackson, the Georgia Department of Corrections and Henry County responded. With the nearest fire hydrant across Ga. Highway 42 from the site of the recycling center, south of Old Bethel Road, crews had to fill tanker trucks and drive them back across the road to supply water to fire hoses attached to the engine parked closest to the blaze. Crews also applied fire-suppressing foam to the flames.
