PHOTOS: A brush fire crept along the South U.S. Highway 1 in Port St. Lucie on Monday, prompting a heavy first responder presence.
At about 2:15 p.m., several crews arrived at the scene of the fire as it sent pools of smoke billowing multiple stories high.
While the fire consumed a patch of pines and vegetation along the highway, it didn't damage any structures, according to the St. Lucie County Fire District.
Once the blaze was brought under control, crews remained on scene to watch for hotspots, the fire district continued.
The Florida Forest Service and the Environmental Resources Department also responded to the brush fire.
