West Palm Beach Fire Department personnel were at the site of a near drowning in West Palm Beach on Saturday around 2 p.m. A man jumped into the intracoastal waterway, trying to save his fishing pole after it fell into the water. He was fishing near Summa Beach on South Flagler Drive. After he lost his pole, the man jumped in the water and was caught in the undertow. The man was pulled from the water within 10 minutes after he fell into the intracoastal waterway, said West Palm Beach Assistant Fire Chief Brent Bloomfield. Officials first reported he had fallen off a boat. The victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. A family member confirmed his death. The victims name has not been released.
