The Fairfield Fire Department is taking to social media to get the word out about heating safety following a deadly fire in the Bronx that left 9 people dead including children. The department posted a flyer with tips from FEMA. Firefighters say anything that can burn like bedding, clothing and curtains should remain at least 3 feet from space heaters. They say to make sure the heater has an automatic shut-off feature so if it tips over it shuts off. They suggest plugging in portable heaters directly into outlets and never into an extension cord or power strip. Fire officials say only use portable heaters from a recognized testing lab and to use a metal or glass screen when using a fireplace to prevent embers or sparks from jumping out. They say not to burn paper in a fireplace.
