In addition to reminding residents to have their heating systems inspected annually, the local fire department is urging them to install home carbon monoxide detectors and not ignore them if they go off.
The reminder comes after the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide leak with potentially lethal consequences Tuesday.
Firefighters were called to a residence in town around 9:30 a.m. for a report of smoke with an odor of gas.
They found elevated levels of carbon monoxide throughout the home, according to the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department, and determined that a flute pipe had separated from a furnace and chimney, causing the carbon monoxide leak and smoke.
New Fairfield firefighters also responded to the scene and helped Sherman firefighters ventilate the residence.
