Potential incentives for volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians will be considered by a Town Council subcommittee after the Board of Finance heard the proposal Tuesday, May 12.
The Board of Finance would not have involvement in establishing such an ordinance, but was being kept in the loop, Town Council Vice Chairman Stephen Karl said.
Phil Sheibley, captain of New Canaan Emergency Medical Services, and Russell Kimes III, assistant chief of New Canaan Fire Company No. 1, the volunteer division of the department, told the Board of Finance during a Zoom web meeting that numbers have been dropping, and that incentives may help attract and retain EMTs and firefighters.
“Everyone sitting here is a volunteer as well,” Board of Finance member Amy Murphy Carroll said.
