Firefighters battled a brush fire in rugged area of Sleeping Giant State Park on Tuesday. Fire Chief Gary Merwede said the fire was reported by Quinnipiac University security who saw smoke in the chin area of the mountain. Hamden fire companies worked with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to contain the brush fire. Merwede tweeted Tuesday night that firefighters extinguished most of the brush fire on Sleeping Giant and stayed on the scene until full-dark. “Hamden will resume operations and suppression efforts first thing tomorrow. This is dangerous terrain.” Around the same time of the fire, lost hikers were reported. The hikers were later found with no injuries. DEEP said Connecticut traditionally experiences high forest fire danger in the spring from mid-March through May.
