Six people and a dog escaped a burning building overnight thanks to working smoke alarms.
According to the Colorado Springs Fire Department, crews responded to a home along Mt. View Lane, just west of Hancock Avenue, on a reported structure fire. When crews pulled up, flames could be seen inside the house.
Firefighters told 11 News the occupants were jolted awake by the smoke alarms and got out safely. No injuries were reported.
The damage to the house rendered it unlivable, at least temporarily; the fire department said everyone would be displaced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In a 2022 interview, the American Red Cross of Southeastern Colorado told 11 News that once a fire sparks, you only have two minutes to get out of your home. Working smoke alarms, especially when a fire ignites overnight, are crucial to making sure all occupants get out safely.
