VIDEO: Firefighters were called to many areas down the interstate. Colorado River Fire Rescue and other fire management agencies responded to several fires along I-70 on Monday evening. The fires started at mile marker 87 westbound. Westbound I-70 was closed on Monday afternoon, but the road was opened back up that evening. The interstate was shut down because of the proximity of the fire to the interstate so the crews could safely get to the fire. “A camper blew a tire, did not realize it, and drove on the rim for a while, causing sparks that started the fires along the road.” The Colorado River Fire Rescue said. On Monday evening, the agency said that the crews had cleared I-70 for the fire and would return on Tuesday morning to continue to mop up hot spots.
