As any Coloradan knows, with storms comes the risk of lightning-caused fires. Firefighters in Chaffee County battled one of those fires on Friday. “Friday afternoon, a storm blew through the Maysville area and lightning struck a very large Ponderosa pine, causing it to catch on fire,” Chaffee County Fire Protection District said in a social media post Sunday. Chaffee County Fire was called out for a smoke investigation and quickly confirmed two things: there was indeed a fire, and it was burning on U.S. Forest Service land. “FS [Forest Service] took command, and with the great help of the men & women of Chaffee Fire, South Ark, Salida Fire and the Forest Service, they hiked a mile in and contained the fire within a few hours,” Chaffee County Fire said. For a job well done, fire crews celebrated with an impromptu pizza party afterward.
