VIDEO: The devastating Carr Fire burned 97% of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in 2018. Six years later, plant life is starting to regrow but there are still many things we can do to prevent something like this from happening again.
“The best thing that we can do, because of these changing conditions and higher fire risks, is doing everything that we can to prevent fire starts, and that is why Whiskeytown has an open flame ban for campfires and barbecue grills and banquettes,” said Laura Shaskey, resources and interpretation division manager.
The National Parks Service (NPS) says climate change contributes to more severe fires. To combat climate change, the NPS encourages people to take alternate forms of transportation, like the Beach Bus, which provides free rides to and from the park in the summer, as well as abiding local fire restrictions and using a carbon footprint calculator.
