PHOTOS: Sunday, June 30, 2024, at approximately 9:45 AM, the Sedona Fire District (SFD) was dispatched for a rescue call transferred from Coconino County Dispatch. The call was for a patient experiencing a life-threatening heat-related illness near Chicken Point along the Broken Arrow Trail. An engine and ambulance from Station 6, along with a UTV from SFD Station responded to the incident. Fire personnel utilized the UTV to reach the patient near the "Devil’s Staircase" section of the Broken Arrow Trail. During the extraction process involving the patient and a family member, the UTV unexpectedly accelerated, causing the driver to lose control and crash. The driver was able to keep the UTV straight on the “Devil’s Staircase” until it struck a boulder, causing it to roll onto the driver’s side and slide approximately 50 feet.
