Firefighters strive to give back to the community, and the Avondale Fire Department is doing just that. They’re visiting Avondale Middle School to act as mentors for students.
“Selected students have the opportunity to work with a fireman or woman (who comes) to the school and talks to them about academic progress, motivation (and) maybe some challenges,” said Susana Gonzales, principal of Avondale Middle School. “They might be able to give them a different perspective as a nonbiased party.”
The Avondale Firefighter Mentor/Mentee Program started before the pandemic and was designed to provide additional support and allow students to build relationships with caring adults in the community. “They (the firefighters) really like to give back,” said Gabby Bobinsky, Avondale public safety community outreach coordinator.
