The Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department has welcomed eight recruits to the first fire academy held at the town’s new training facility.
The recruits will participate in a 16-week program at the Gilbert Public Safety Training Facility before graduating as full-time firefighters in July, according to the department.
“For the first time in Gilbert’s history we can train our own recruits without relying on neighboring fire departments for training facilities,” Gilbert Fire Chief Jim Jobusch said in a press release. Jobusch added that community support has been key to the creation of the complex.
The 50-acre facility, located near Power and Pecos roads, features tactical training areas, classrooms, burn buildings, a driving track and more. It also houses the department’s health and wellness, EMS and training divisions, and is shared with the Gilbert Police Department.
Gilbert firefighters previously trained in Mesa.
