VIDEO: Montgomery Fire/Rescue Chief Miford Jordan was honored at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed presented a proclamation to honor his service and commitment.
“When you consider the everyday dangers that those in the department go through, it’s important to have solid leadership like that,” said Reed.
Jordan made history when he was appointed as Montgomery’s first African American fire chief in 2006.
“I was born as a young Black American not having the right to sit in this chair today,” Jordan said. “To take all of that in, it means a lot.” Jordan has overseen important milestones for the department. In 2014, Montgomery became the first city in Alabama to achieve an ISO 1 rating, according to the city’s website.
