After a string of fires across the area, the Mid-Alabama Red Cross wants people to practice more safety checks around their homes. Mid-Alabama Red Cross says from March 1 to March 29, they’ve responded to 403 fires across the five counties they serve. Those counties are Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, Coosa, and St. Clair. The Red Cross says this time of year they see a lot of fires caused by cooking or grilling, as well as fires started by people burning brush near their homes. One spokesperson says they’re also seeing lots of electrical fires. Officials recommend not only checking your smoke alarms, but doing routine safety checks around your home to make sure you’re not creating the risk for an electrical fire.
