An investigation is underway after one person was killed and a man critically injured in a predawn house fire. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded just after 4 a.m. to a home in the 1400 block of Hartford Drive on the city’s eastside. Battalion Chief Sebastian Carrillo said firefighters attacked the blaze and pulled a male victim from the house. They rendered aid to him and then rushed him to UAB Hospital where he is in critical condition. Another crew battling the blaze came across a second victim in the kitchen. She was pronounced dead. Carrillo said both victims are middle-aged. Birmingham Police Department’s Crime Scene Unit is on the scene.
