VIDEO: Is your car at risk of catching fire just sitting at your home?
Auto company Carfax said the number of “park outside” recalls—warnings from federal regulators and automakers to park vehicles away from garages or other structures because of significant fire risk—jumped 40 percent nationally and 45 percent in Greater Boston between May 2023 and Jan. 2024.
“These are the kinds of recalls that frankly should keep you awake at night,” said Carfax spokesperson Mike Lavigne. Carfax said more than 3.7 million vehicles under a “park outside” recall are currently on American roads, including 72,672 in Massachusetts. The most recent high-profile case occurred last fall when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced “park outside” recalls for 3.3 million Hyundais and Kias due to fire risks.

Local firefighters responded to the state Department of Fire Services office in Stow after a Concord resident dropped off an unexploded WWII-era grenade on Friday, prompting fire officials to remind residents not to do that.
The resident walked into the lobby of the Sudbury Road DFS office Friday afternoon, saying they had the grenade in their trunk. The state police bomb squad and Stow firefighters responded to inspect the device. State police determined that the device was inert and was likely a training grenade.
"I would like to remind all residents to call 911 immediately if you find something suspicious or that resembles any kind of military ordinance," Stow Fire Chief John Paul Benoit said. "Do not attempt to move or handle any potential explosive. Leave the area and let first responders handle the situation professionally."

Firefighters were called to Walnut Street around 8:30 a.m.
The initial call was from an off-duty Boston firefighter who was driving down Route 9. When authorities arrived a couple of minutes later, they saw heavy fire on the first floor. Authorities were told one person was potentially still inside and tried to save him, but unfortunately he did not survive.
Firefighters entered the two-family duplex from the front, and encountered heavy flames and heat as they worked to get the man out. The man's injuries were fatal, and he was pronounced dead on scene, according to a news release from the state fire marshal's office.
