Harris County highschoolers experience first live-fire opportunity

VIDEO: For the first time in Harris County history, high school students were sent directly into a burning building. However, these students had been preparing all semester to keep from going up in flames. It’s all a part of the high school’s Technical, Agricultural, and Education Program (CTAE) teaching students the basics of being a firefighter. “I just thought it was going to be a lot scarier than it was, but I thought it was really cool,” junior Addison McCormick shared with WRBL after going through the Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department's burn building. Hamilton Volunteer Fire Department Chief Mitt Smith has been teaching this class to students for two years now. Wednesday was the first time students experienced a live-fire opportunity. While Chief Smith is teaching students best practices, fire behaviors, and how to attack a blaze, he is also recruiting.

DeKalb County firefighter returns to line of duty after overcoming his battle with cancer

A Georgia firefighter jumped back into action Wednesday after overcoming his battle with cancer. DeKalb County firefighter Peter Le was diagnosed with cancer several months ago, according to DeKalb County Fire Captain Jaeson Daniels. Fire crews received a call Wednesday morning about a fire at a home along Alpha Drive near Decatur. Daniels said Le didn't hesitate to respond to the call on his first shift back. "He’s thrilled to be back at the station with his colleagues. This morning, the bell rang, and he immediately jumped on the rig," DeKalb County Fire wrote in a social media post. Thankfully, Daniels said no one was hurt in the fire. Investigators believe the flames sparked due to the clothes dryer. "Le expresses his gratitude for the support he received from everyone," the fire department added in the post.
