The Stevens Point Fire Department is embracing new forms of media in order to stay in touch with their residents – they are using podcasting as a way to keep people informed. The hosts – Ben Schultz and Justin Malin – are aiming to record one episode each month, revolving around topics that relate to their theme of the month.
For instance, in July, the topic is Riverfront Rendezvous – they’ll be giving tips on how to stay safe while getting out and celebrating the 4th of July and all of the festivities that the city has to offer. They say that, while there are a lot of podcasts out there geared towards firefighters and improving their jobs, there weren’t a lot geared towards common citizens. They say that one of the hardest parts about being in the department is getting the word out – that’s why they’re starting a podcast, so that they can broadcast their message, whether it’s about what’s new in the firehouse, or news around town – and get that message out to whoever is listening.
