70th Year for Town of Turtle Fire Department

VIDEO: Some work day jobs; others work nights. But when an emergency call comes in, the Town of Turtle volunteer firefighters who can leave work come together to meet the challenge before them. Itโ€™s been like that for seven decades, with this month the department turning 70 years old, said Brian Reddy, Assistant Fire Chief. Reddy is among the 24 volunteers in the department headed by Chief Jason Rowland.

The chief works in the area and can get away for emergency calls, Reddy said. Other volunteers come from the Janesville and Beloit area as well as from the Town of Turtle. The department is a member of MABAS (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) allowing the town mutual aid from area fire departments when needed.

โ€œWe often have to call for mutual aid with so many volunteers working days,โ€™โ€™ said Reddy, who works in Whitewater. Still, the department has had 296 calls so far this year.
