Lightning sparks Crimson Fire in New Mexico’s Gila National Forest

A lightning strike Sunday started what has been named the Crimson Fire, located 15 miles southeast of Glenwood. Located on a ridge between Rain Creek and West Mogollon Creek southwest of Mogollon Baldy Creek. As of Monday, it was 10 acres in size, fueled by dead brush in the Whitewater Baldy burn scar, and was 0% contained when last reported. Gila National Forest personnel responded, but because the fire is located in a steep, inaccessible area, firefighter safety is of high concern. If someone was injured, it would take a long time to get them to medical treatment. A type 3 helicopter is in service.
