Malesso fire exposes hazards of abandoned properties

The Guam Fire Department and Guam Police Department were on scene early Saturday morning in Malesso where a wood and tin structure became fully engulfed. The makeshift structure was home initially believed to be abandoned but was later confirmed to be occupied. The GFD Spokesperson Nick Garrido reported that fire units responded to Route 4 in Malesso at 6:41 a.m.

“Upon arrival, crews discovered an approximate 40×40 wood and tin structure fully engulfed in flames. The fire was extinguished and no injuries reported,” Garrido said. GFD was present with a fire truck ambulance and emergency medical services unit, while GPD sent patrol units. At 7:16 a.m., GPD closed off north and southbound lanes near the Hemlani’s Apartments as firefighters fought to extinguish the fire across the street. Malesso Mayor Franklin Champaco was on scene, but told the Post that he had yet to make contact with the family who owns the property which is littered with inoperable vehicles and debris near the structure.

Champaco said the family of three, which included two minor children, most recently occupied the home. “After the mom had passed, the auntie has custody of the kids, โ€ฆ everyone is safe.” He said the children’s father was in the process of moving out. “He lost a lot of stuff – memories of his wife.” Champaco learned about the fire from one of his employees.
