Guam health officials confirm respiratory virus uptick amid US summer surge

The Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services has confirmed an uptick in respiratory viral activity on the island, including COVID-19 and influenza cases, as coronavirus cases are rising across the United States, as they have every summer since the pandemic began five years ago. “Increased respiratory viral activity – COVID-19 and influenza – has been detected. DPHSS anticipated this and has actively encouraged preventive measures,” the department stated Tuesday in response to inquiries from The Guam Daily Post.

The confirmation comes as health officials nationwide track what appears to be another predictable summer wave of COVID-19 infections. COVID-19 cases are growing or likely growing in at least 26 states and Washington, D.C., as of July 15, 2025, the CDC says, while more recent data suggests COVID-19 infections are “growing or likely growing in 40 states,” said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to Guam’s latest bi-weekly influenza epidemiology report dated Aug. 11, COVID-19 activity on the island has reached levels that “almost align with what was seen in 2024.” The report notes that while COVID-19 has yet to demonstrate predictability in Guam, the recent increase in activity “has been expected, and viral respiratory guidance and prevention measures have been encouraged.”
