Guam Fire Department bags record high $5M federal funding for fire pumpers, more

More than $5 million in federal funding has been awarded to the Guam Fire Department for the purchase of fire pumpers and more to significantly enhance Guamโ€™s emergency response and preparedness capabilities. This represents the largest federal award to date for GFD, the department said on Monday. The $5 million will support GFDโ€™s initiatives that modernize infrastructure, improve fleet readiness and ensure safer and more efficient response operations for the island community.

GFD received the award from the U.S. Department of the Interiorโ€™s Office of Insular Affairs and will go toward:

  • Technical Assistance Program: $400,000 for rescue and response mobility enhancement
  • Maintenance Assistance Program: $350,000 for the Maintenance Modernization Initiative
  • Energizing Insular Communities: $4,320,000 for fuel-efficient fire pumper procurement. A fire pumper is a type of fire truck, also called a fire engine, equipped with a water tank and a pump to fight fires.

Collectively, these projects will enable GFD to upgrade its maintenance facility and streamline maintenance operations, perform emergency repairs to restore its outdated fleet, and procure new fire apparatuses ensuring that critical response resources remain reliable, efficient, and safe for both personnel and the community.
