VIDEO: As smoke billows in the air from brush fires in the region, crews are keeping a close eye on the risk of more starting.
โAs fires increase in frequency,โ Assistant Regional Forester for Region Five with the West Virginia Division of Forestry Charlie Spencer said, โwe have to deploy resources. Our guys donโt get the weekend off.โ
Spencer said in the last couple days there has been an increase in brush fires.
โTemperature and wind and sunlight, those three factors really affect fire starts and they affect how big fires get,โ Spencer said.
He said itโs been a slow start with around 45 fires so far in just a few counties.
โWhen fire season gets going in a big way,โ Spencer said, โit takes our guys away from their families. It takes our foresters away from our regular life. They donโt get to go home.โ
