On Monday, just after 11:00AM, Yakima County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a residence located in the 500 block of Firing Center Road, near Selah, in reference to a welfare check on a non-verbal developmentally disabled vulnerable adult. Deputies were advised that a 24-year-old resident of this location had walked away from their home and was being followed by a caregiver.
Prior to the arrival of law enforcement, the caregiver provided updates on the subject who had entered the Roza Canal and was struggling to stay above the water. Deputies, Fire personnel, Officers, and Troopers arrived and located the subject floating down the canal. After approximately fifteen minutes, law enforcement on scene was able to remove the subject from the water and medical attention was provided immediately. The subject was transported to a local hospital to receive medical treatment and is believed to make a full recovery.
The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Selah Police Department, Washington State Patrol, Yakima Training Center Police, Selah Fire personnel, and Yakima Training Center Fire personnel. It is the mission of the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office in incidents such as this to preserve the life of all individuals involved and maintain the safety of the public.
