Man accused of intentionally setting three Utah Transit Authority vans on fire in Midvale

A man was arrested after he allegedly set three Utah Transit Authority vans on fire. Luke Harrison Smith, 42, was arrested on three counts of second-degree felony arson. UTA surveillance cameras captured Smith entering a TRAX parking lot at 180 West 7250 South in Midvale with a clear container. He reportedly stood near the caps of the three vans before moving toward the front.

“Flames were observed just moments later,” the affidavit states. Smith allegedly ran from the immediate area, but did not go far. Officers arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and took Smith into custody without incident.

No one else was in the vicinity of the vehicles. Smith was transported to the Salt Lake County Metro Jail. The affidavit states that Smith was the suspect of a burglary in Sandy the same night. He “poses a significant threat to the public,” the affidavit states.
