Firefighters gain ground on Cherry Fire, ‘active heat’ still present

The Cherry Fire, burning in the Spanish Fork Ranger District of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, has reached 63% containment, according to the U.S. Forest Service. The fire remains mapped at 540 acres. Firefighters reportedly walked the entire perimeter on Sunday, Oct. 5. Containment has mostly been reached on the west and south portion of the wildfire, officials said. โ€œThere has been no fire growth for the past couple of days,โ€ an update issued Monday morning states.

โ€œHowever, there is still active heat around the fire edge. Today, crews will continue to patrol the fire and address any hot spots.โ€ Crews will focus on the north and east perimeter of the blaze where there is not yet containment, officials said. Due to the progress made, the Northern Utah Type 3 Team will give command of the wildfire back to the local district today, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. โ€œThe fire will be staffed and patrolled until containment is reached,โ€ Mondayโ€™s update states. โ€œThe fire area burned in a very mosaic pattern, leaving large pockets of unburned fuel. Some of these areas still have heat and visible smoke that will be patrolled and worked until the threat is reduced.โ€
