Driver crashes stolen car into gas pump igniting fire at Salt Lake gas station

PHOTOS: A driver attempted to flee from an officer in a stolen car, crashing into a gas pump and igniting a fire, according to Salt Lake City police. Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said an officer spotted what they believed to be a stolen vehicle at a gas station near 400 S Redwood Road on Saturday. The officer attempted to make a traffic stop when the driver allegedly reversed the vehicle, striking and knocking over a gas pump.

The impact ignited a fire that engulfed the vehicle. Police said the driver fled the scene on foot and was located and taken into custody a few blocks from the gas station. They said the suspect was arrested “without incident.” The driver had minor injuries and was treated at the scene. No one else was injured during the incident. The gas station was evacuated, and crews with the Salt Lake City Fire Department shut off the gas pump using an emergency feature. Firefighters then extinguished the flames.
