Update: Fort Worth firefighter heads home after 34 days in hospital following roof collapse

VIDEO: A Fort Worth firefighter who nearly lost his life battling a blaze last month is finally home. After 34 days in the hospital, firefighter Caleb Halvorson was wheeled out of Parkland Hospital on Monday afternoon by his stepfather, mother, and wife.

Halvorson was seriously injured while on duty the morning of September 3 when the roof of a burning building collapsed, trapping him under the debris. โ€œI was trapped for a minute and 45 seconds, I think. Feels like forever. You feel your skin burning, and you feel this heavy weight on you,โ€ Halvorson said.

He remembers he could move his right leg. โ€œMy good leg was outside, thankfully, like outside of the entrapment. And I’m kicking my leg up and down. I’m screaming. My arms are stretched out wide. I can’t call for a mayday. I’m just hoping anybody sees me, hears me, anything,โ€ Halvorson said.

Eventually, his team found him and began to carefully yet quickly pull him out of the debris. โ€œThey tried to pick it up off me, and it didn’t budge an inch. And I remember right then I was like, โ€˜I’m gonna die. This is it,” he said. However, his crew refused to give up and worked frantically to free him. Halvorson remained conscious through the ordeal.
