VIDEO: As the city of Hutto continues to grow, leaders are looking to open a new fire station, but this one will be in a unique location. In a new partnership between Hutto ISD and Williamson County ESD 3, the city will be building the fifth fire station on the cityโs second high school.
โThe idea was to create a program in the high school related to the fire service, fire classes and emergency medical technician training,” said Rob Bocanegra, the Assistant Fire Chief for Williamson County ESD 3. In exchange for the land for the fire station, Hutto Fire will be providing fire and EMT training for high school students. The district and Wilco ESD 3 said it’s a partnership they’ve been talking about for a long time.
“Way back when we started talking about this idea it was a recruitment tool,” Bocanegra said. “How do we encourage young people to get into the fire service and pursue a career in fire?” The program will be similar to Hutto ISD’s other Career and Technical Education programs, where students can take specialized training courses while in high school. Bocanegra said having this training while in high school will save students time by preparing them to take the state tests and enter the workforce straight after graduating high school.
