Chief says 40 people displaced after apartment fire in southeast Houston

VIDEO: A large apartment fire in southeast Houston left dozens without power and shelter Wednesday after flames tore through part of a two-story building and spread into the attic. It happened at an apartment complex on Morley Street near Broadway Street and Hobby Airport.

Houston Fire Department Station 26 District Chief Michael Flanagan said when crews arrived around 7:15 p.m., they saw heavy smoke coming from the second floor, which quickly spread to the attic and burned the roof off the building. He said high winds and the extreme heat made the firefight more difficult. While battling the blaze, two firefighters and two civilians suffered heat exhaustion, but all were treated on scene and no one was taken to the hospital. Flanagan said the fire damaged about six units directly, and 16 units are without power. In total, about 40 residents have been displaced. The Red Cross has been requested to assist those affected. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
