VIDEO: First responders have the difficult responsibility of having to train for the worst-case scenarios, and Thursday was no different. Hereford first responders along with the school district, held their first active shooter emergency response training.
โToday was just an opportunity for us to get together all of our first responders and see how things would go in, as close as could to a real-life scenario,โ said Chief Landon Swan, Hereford Police Department. The Hereford Police Department conducted a joint full-scale emergency response training exercise alongside the Deaf Smith County Sheriffโs Office, Texas Department of Public Safety, Hereford Regional Medical Center, EMS, Hereford Fire Department, and Hereford Independent School District.
โThis is the first time weโve ever had an opportunity to do something like this as a group. It so far has allowed us to evaluate our communications, which is always a problem. So we know we can improve there, trying to feed off of each otherโs energy and make sure that weโre not stepping on each otherโs toes at the same time,โ said Chief Tim Burkhalter, Hereford Fire Department. Officials say this is an unfortunate necessity, but it helps responders and the district work better together.
