Firefighters train, ignite 36 acres in prescribed Sabine County burn

VIDEOS: At Needmore Point in Sabine County, some firefighters in training learned how to properly perform a controlled burn, a skill they say is very important. โ€œWe can learn some things in the classroom but thereโ€™s so many things about fire management and prescribed fires that just has to be done in the field,” Andy McCrady, a program coordinator for prescribed burns with the Texas A&M Forest Service, said. There were 15 wildland firefighters walking through the woods at Needmore Point in Sabine County. They left trails of fire behind them, burning around 36 acres. โ€œWhile it seems kind of chaotic and strange to walk through the woods and drag your drip torch and light it on fire, itโ€™s really a safe place to be as long as you have communication and know how to get out of the forest if you need to,โ€ McCrady said.
