Fire in north Houston knocks out power for nearby businesses

VIDEO: Firefighters spent several hours overnight battling flames that tore through a lumber yard in north Houston early Wednesday. Crews were called to the scene along Jensen Drive, where towering flames were shooting through stacks of lumber outside a commercial building.

Houston Fire Department District Chief Wesley Swanson said the fire appeared to involve lumber stored outdoors and a small nearby structure. โ€œItโ€™s mostly just lumber thatโ€™s stacked and then there was some sort of small structure there. Weโ€™re not exactly sure what it was, if it was a storage shed or something like that,โ€ Swanson said. โ€œWe were able to control the fire rather quickly.โ€

Although firefighters managed to contain the flames within a few hours, the fire caused power outages in the area after taking down several electric lines. CenterPoint Energy crews remained at the scene Wednesday morning to restore service. Investigators are still working to determine what started the fire.
