Fire damages eight units at Wharton apartment complex, officials say

Crews from across Wharton County rushed to the scene of a major apartment fire early Wednesday morning that damaged several units at the Riverbend Apartment Complex on Junior College Boulevard. According to the Wharton Police Department, emergency crews were dispatched around 2:38 a.m. to help contain the blaze.

A total of eight units were affected, including two that were vacant at the time of the fire. Officials said all residents were safely evacuated thanks to the fast and coordinated response from multiple agencies.

Those assisting at the scene included Wharton Fire, Wharton EMS, Hungerford, Glen Flora, East Bernard, Boling Fire, and El Campo Fire and EMS, along with the Wharton County Sheriffโ€™s Office.

Investigators said the fire does not appear to be intentionally set, but the State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office and Wharton PD are continuing to investigate the cause.
