VIDEOS: Just a few days ago, East Texas firefighters responded to a scene to battle an unusual type of fire: a compost fire. On Sunday, fire crews from Big Sandy and surrounding areas responded to the fire at Vital Earth Resources on highway 80 just east of the city.
โBig pile of wood, and youโve got a 10-foot flame on that pile of wood. Water is the key,โ said Big Sandy firefighter and Vital Earth employee Don Cannon. When crews arrived at Vital Earth, they found a mountain of compost was burning. โThere are definite challenges with an instance like this. Crews went straight to work trying to get that fire put out, containing it within its boundaries or what was already burning, not let it spread beyond that. Protecting structures, protecting personnel,โ said Big Sandy firefighter Samuel Vanderford.
