PHOTOS: A Chattanooga firefighter found himself in an unexpected role as a midwife when he helped a couple welcome their baby girl into the world on the side of Interstate 75 in Chattanooga. In the early hours last Thursday, a new arrival just couldn’t wait for her mom and dad to get to the hospital.
The couple met Engine 8 at a gas station on Gunbarrel Road, after Emma Lucille had already been born. That’s when Lieutenant Alexander Efiom of Engine 8’s Green Shift helped the baby girl by making sure she was healthy. It just so happened that earlier in his 24-hour shift, Lt. Efiom and his crew attended an OB class taught by Erlanger Women’s Services on assisting with the delivery of newborns. Lt. Efiom ensured the newborn’s airway was clear and checked her vital signs until Hamilton County EMS arrived, according to the Chattanooga Fire Department (CFD).
