Brave resident helps neighbors escape apartment fire in Memphis

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Several people will have to find a new place to call home after a portion of the Creekside Meadows Apartments caught fire in Whitehaven Thursday morning. One man, Terrance Jones, at the scene jumped into action to help his neighbors after getting his own family out, including his grandmother.

WREG spoke with Jones, who said he stepped in without any hesitation. โ€œI beat on the door as hard as I could and said โ€˜fire, fire,โ€™ cause most people are asleep,โ€ Jones stated.

Once firefighters arrived at the scene, they moved in and doused the flames. Once they were put out, firefighters then used chainsaws to cut ventilation holes in the roof to allow the heat and smoke to escape.

Unfortunately, the unit Jones shares with his family sustained smoke damage. Despite what happened, Jones said he was thankful he was at the right place at the right time.
