West Florence Fire Battalion Chief earns state designation

VIDEO: West Florence Fire Departmentโ€™s battalion chief marked a new milestone in his career.

John Mays, the West Florence Fire Department battalion chief, received the South Carolina Chief Fire Officer designation from the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.

โ€œMy chief inspired me to go,โ€ said Mays. The intense 40-hour training module covers every topic you can think of that firefighters, personnel, and community members face today.

โ€œIt covers formality more of reducing injury, running our SOGs and our protocols that we have, holding a standard with our department to keeping our members safe, our community safe, and the public citizens safe,โ€ Mays said. โ€œItโ€™s most important.โ€

Mays is one of 200 chiefs from around the state to earn the designation.

โ€œI had a lot of other people that have taken the program in the past, some colleagues and others, people Iโ€™ve worked with that are battalion chiefs that are now assistant chiefs,โ€ said Mays. โ€œIt kind of motivated me to go.โ€
