New EMS heatstroke tool in Greenville County is saving lives

VIDEO: With temperatures on the rise, Prisma Health EMS has a new tool to help cool heatstroke victims faster. They’re sharing with other first responders to save lives in Greenville County and beyond. “It’s a large plastic device that allows us to put the patient in it and submerge them in water and ice,” said Aaron Dix, Prisma Health EMS’s administrator for mobile medicine. “And this alone, in about 15 or 20 minutes, will reduce their body core temperature back to a normal or a safe level.” Traditionally, Prisma EMS uses ice or ice packs. This new option can save lives in a moment when seconds mean the difference between life and death. “When you get to 104 and higher, your cells start breaking down. Your organs stop functioning, your kidneys shut down, your brain starts to shut down, your central nervous system starts to shut down, and your cells actually start being destroyed,” Dix said. The tool helps EMS help you anytime and anyplace.
