City of Folly Beach officially offering police officer retirement to firefighters

VIDEO: The City of Folly Beach announced it will now formally be offering police officer retirement to its firefighters after a city council meeting on Tuesday.

The new resolution will officially enroll all full-time employees working solely as firefighters in the police officer retirement system. The fire department has been offering the retirement system for the past couple of years, but wants to ensure it will continue to be formally offered in the future.

City of Folly Beach Human Resources Director Anderson Still says the city was approached by the retirement system to make it an official formality.

โ€œThanks to some efforts by public safety, we now have a lot more full-time employees,โ€ Still says. โ€œAnd we believe that this was something prudent to do to make sure that we may keep offering the best benefits to our employees as possible.โ€

Still says the police officer retirement system allows for a more stable timeline for retirement. The retirement plan assumes life expectancy and investment risk. To be eligible, firefighters must also devote at least 1,600 hours per year to their work.ย
