‘A special day for us’: New fire station in Myrtle Beach has grand opening

Myrtle Beach Fire Station No. 3 had a grand opening Saturday, where city leaders and the public were in attendance and could view the new facility.

The fire station, which is located along Harrelson Boulevard, is the first new station to open in 20 years.

“It really is a special day for us and the entire city,” said Myrtle Beach Fire Department Fire Chief Tom Gwyer.

The new station comes at a time of growth for the City of Myrtle Beach.

“We realized as we were growing, we needed more space, technology changes over the years, we needed to keep up with technology, and a building that was 60 or 70 years old that was never built to be a fire station quickly outgrew our needs,” Gwyer said.

The station comes with new features that aim to better serve the community when it comes to responding to calls, such as bi-fold doors that open quicker for vehicles and a new station alerting system.
