Officials: Man injured as fire destroys top floors of Reading apartment building

VIDEO: Fire crews worked overnight in Reading, early Wednesday, after a fire tore through the rooftop of a property along 5th Street.

As could be seen in footage shared to social media, fire crews worked to extinguish the flames as they grew along the rooftop of residential property in Reading.

Crews were initially called to the 100 block of North 5th Street in Reading at about 1:56 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

Speaking to NBC10 at the scene on Wednesday morning, Deputy Fire Chief Richard Kuhn of the Reading Fire Department said crews responded to a report of someone who believed they heard an explosion, to find fire on “all the upper floors” of an apartment building. “The upper two floors are essentially gone,” said Kuhn.

Kuhn said the roof was gone as well. The cause of the fire, he said, was still under investigation. One man, he said, has been hospitalized as a result of this incident, but he did not immediately know the individual’s condition.
