VIDEO: More than 60 firefighters were taking less than five minutes for cancer screenings on Wednesday in Williamsport.
This was the third round of screenings for active and retired firefighters with the Williamsport Bureau of Fire.
Firefighters have a 62% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer.
Organizers say the goal is to catch any possible cancer cases as early as possible.
Tracey Harer, President of Local 736 Firefighters Union, says, “And that’s why these tests are trying to find things super early before they are a stage four symptomatic cancer, the treatments are cheaper and the survivability rates are way higher.”
The Williamsport Bureau of Fire hopes to start ultrasound testing next year.
